The visit highlighted the strong connection between classroom instruction, technical training, and real-world work experience. Students were actively engaged in projects that reflected the types of skills local employers need, from construction and shop-based learning to emerging technology in agriculture and industry.

EconAlliance works closely with the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District to help connect students from career pathway programs to meaningful paid internships. These internships give students the opportunity to apply what they are learning in the classroom while gaining workplace experience, building confidence, and exploring career options close to home.

During the site visit, board members had the opportunity to observe students working collaboratively, using tools, solving problems, and learning in an environment designed to prepare them for high-demand industries. The experience reinforced the importance of investing in local talent and creating stronger connections between education and industry.

Programs like the Mark Richardson Center play an important role in developing the next generation of skilled workers for the Santa Maria Valley and the Central Coast. By partnering with schools, employers, and community leaders, EconAlliance is helping build a stronger workforce pipeline that supports both students and the regional economy.

Paid internships are a key part of that effort. They provide students with early exposure to career pathways while helping local businesses connect with motivated young people who are learning technical, professional, and problem-solving skills.
